Payload

Payload is the data in a packet or file, not including the header information. It can also refer to the harmful results of malware such as data destruction, etc. When data is sent over the internet, a header identifies the source and destination of the cyber packet while the payload identifies the actual data that is being sent.  The payload is the only data that is received by the destination system.  In association with a computer virus, a payload is malicious software content that a virus distributes. It is the harmful effects of the software that can result in data destruction, messages with offensive text, or spurious emails sent to a large number of other computer users. The payload is the actual unit of data being sent over the internet.  It follows the header, which carries the destination and source information, until the target is reached.  Once the payload reaches the destination, the header information is removed.  Also, if associated with a computer virus, it is the malicious software content that the virus executes.
