Defense Security Service (DSS)

The Defense Security Service (DSS) is under the Department of Defense (DoD), and works to secure the nations technological base, while overseeing classified information both US and foreign in the industry. Originally founded in 1972 as the Defense Investigative Service (DIS) and was changed to the DSS in 1992.The DSS main services include: managing cleared facilities, collecting, analyzing, and providing information to both industry and government partners, security education and training, and providing information technology services that support the industrial security mission of the DoD in particular, along with the military, defense contractors, and 23 federal agencies.The Defense Security Service has three core mission areas, the National Industrial Security Program, Security Education, Training, and Awareness Program, and the Chief Information Office. The National Industrial Security Program is spread over four geographic regions and the United States. It provides support to contractors on matters of national security in cleared facilities, and processes requests for clearances. The National Industrial Security Program, Security Education, Training, and Awareness Program, and the Chief Information Office provides programs revolving around education, training, and awareness to the DoD, US Government personnel, and contractors. The Chief Information Office provides Information Systems and telecommunications support.
